The Norwegian Lundehund is one of the most unique breeds out there! Here are 7 things you didn’t know about this special pup:
- The word “Lunde” comes from the Norwegian word for puffin, which is also known as a sea parrot! This breed was specifically bred to hunt these birds on Norway’s rocky island of Vaeroy.
- The Norwegian Lundehund has six toes on each foot – all of them double or triple jointed – giving them an amazing range of motion that helps them navigate narrow caves and tunnels while hunting puffins!
- Their ears can be closed tightly against their head to keep out dirt and water while they’re hunting in tight spaces!
- They have a short but dense double coat that’s slightly thicker around their neck and shoulders to protect them from cold water and sharp rocks when they’re out in nature!
- They are intelligent, alert, loyal companions who love being part of the family – but they need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy!
- They make great pets for active families looking for an unusual pet – even though they may not be suited for hunting puffins anymore!
- The Norwegian Lundehund stands between 12–15 inches tall at the shoulder with males usually measuring in at 13–15 inches tall while females measure 12–14 inches tall!
