During his coverage of Hurricane Ian as it made landfall in a Florida harbor, NewsNation correspondent Brian Entin assisted in the rescue of a dog and a cat.

A Florida guy walked through choppy waves to rescue the puppy from a sailboat, then led her to Entin, who put her in the trunk of a white SUV. Entin posted a video of the animal rescue.

Entin claims that the person who saved the dog returned to get a cat that was also abandoned during the storm. View the Wednesday video here or at the top of this article.

Thursday, Entin tweeted that the puppy was doing OK and shared a selfie of them.

The correspondent was located in Fort Myers, according to NewsNation’s brief report on the rescue. At 3:05 p.m. yesterday (East Coast time), Hurricane Ian made landfall on the state’s southwest coast.

“It’s a totally different situation now along the water. Many of the sailboats are on their sides … the masts have snapped,” Entin said. “It’s just terrible what’s happening down here.”

Many locals in the Fort Myers area believed Hurricane Ian would be a Tampa Storm, according to reports from Entin. According to PowerOutage.us, the Category 4 hurricane cut electricity to more than 1.6 million homes on Wednesday night.

As the hurricane’s center moves toward Orlando in the northeast, more disruptions have since been reported in the state’s north-central region.

In addition to firsthand experiences posted on Twitter, CNN, The Weather Channel, and other national and local media sites have captured footage of flooding, strong winds, and various degrees of destruction.

The Miami Herald reports that while over 2.5 million people in the hurricane’s evacuation zones have left, at least 31 residents on an unnamed barrier island in Charlotte County have chosen to remain and seek refuge.

Other news outlets have highlighted humorous approaches to the crisis, such as equating light flashes with the arrival of transformers, checking The Waffle House index (whether the breakfast restaurant chain is still open indicates where evacuations are most necessary), and more.
