The Swedish Lapphund is an ancient breed of dog that has been around for centuries. It is believed to be one of the oldest breeds in existence today and is native to Sweden. This medium-sized breed has a typical Spitz appearance, with a thick coat of fur and a long, bushy tail that can curl up over its back.

The Swedish Lapphund was originally bred by the Sami people of Lapland as a reindeer herding dog. They were also used for hunting and as watchdogs. Today, they are still used for herding reindeer but are also popular family pets due to their friendly nature and intelligence.

Physical Characteristics

The Swedish Lapphund is a medium-sized breed with a rectangular shape and proud head carriage. The skull should be slightly rounded with small ears that stand erect on top of the head. The eyes should be almond-shaped and dark brown in color. The muzzle should be straight and taper towards the nose, which should be black in color. The teeth should meet in a scissors bite.

The coat of the Swedish Lapphund is thick and double layered, with a wooly undercoat and longer guard hairs on top. Common colors include black, brown, gray, white, red, sable, or any combination thereof. The tail should be long and bushy, curling up over its back when it’s excited or alert.

Temperament

The Swedish Lapphund is an intelligent breed that loves to please its owners. They are friendly dogs that get along well with children and other pets if properly socialized from an early age. They are loyal companions who will bond closely with their families but can also be independent thinkers when it comes to problem solving tasks or obedience training exercises.

These dogs have high energy levels so they need plenty of exercise every day to stay healthy and happy. They love running around outdoors but can also adapt well to living in apartments if given enough mental stimulation through interactive toys or puzzle games indoors as well as regular walks outside each day.

Health Concerns

Like all breeds, the Swedish Lapphund may suffer from certain health issues throughout its lifetime such as hip dysplasia or eye problems like cataracts or progressive retinal atrophy (PRA). Responsible breeders will screen their breeding stock for these conditions before producing puppies so it’s important to ask about this when looking for your new pup!
Swedish Lapphunds typically live between 12-14 years when cared for properly so you can expect many years of companionship from this friendly breed!
