The Black Russian Terrier is a large and immensely powerful working dog. It has a coarse all-black coat and is known for its courage, confidence, and strength. This breed was originally bred by the Soviet military to be used as a guard dog in cold climates. The BRT is highly intelligent, energetic, and loyal, making it an ideal companion for families.

Characteristics of the Black Russian Terrier

The Black Russian Terrier has large bones, a large head, thick neck, pronounced chest and prominent muscles. It exudes strength, power and agility. These dogs have exceptionally stable nervous systems and radiate confidence and tranquility. They are calm yet alert and make excellent watchdogs due to their protective nature.

Training Your Black Russian Terrier

Black Russian Terriers are highly intelligent dogs that require consistent training from an early age in order to reach their full potential. They need firm but gentle handling as they can be sensitive to harsh corrections or punishments. Positive reinforcement methods such as clicker training work best with this breed as they respond well to rewards-based training techniques.

Grooming Your Black Russian Terrier

The BRT has a medium-to-long coarse coat that forms a beard and eyebrows which requires regular brushing in order to keep it looking its best. This breed also needs regular bathing with high quality dog shampoo in order to maintain its coat’s natural oils. Nail trimming should also be done regularly in order to prevent overgrowth which can cause discomfort for your pet.

Health Concerns of the Black Russian Terrier

This breed is generally healthy but there are some health concerns that owners should be aware of such as hip dysplasia, eye problems, bloat (gastric torsion), skin allergies, thyroid issues, epilepsy, heart disease and joint problems such as elbow dysplasia or luxating patella (slipping kneecap). Regular vet checkups are recommended in order to catch any potential health issues early on before they become more serious problems down the line.
