A hilarious video of a “sassy” German short-haired pointer hesitantly showing affection for her owner has gone viral on TikTok. When Stella is repeatedly requested to do so in the video, she “begrudgingly” slams her paw onto her owner, @jencosy. The caption for the clip reads, “When you’re trying to watch your show and your human is being super needy.”
One user commented, “If someone ever asks you to define the word ‘begrudgingly’ show them this.”
While the directions “sit” and “heel” can be pretty helpful, “paw” is mostly just a method for you and your dog to bond and a technique to have them work for a treat.

Sit. Once your dog has sat, reward him with a goodie. It puts them in the right position to shake and communicates to him that there are rewards available that they can earn.
Empty Hand. Hold out an empty hand level with your dog’s chest, with the palm facing up.
Sniff. Make your dog wait while you explain why your hand is where before allowing him to sniff or lick it.
Wait. Keep your hand out as you watch for something other than your dog sniffing or licking it. He will ultimately get inquisitive and reach out to touch your hand with a paw.
Reward. Praise and reward your dog as soon as he elevates his paw, even if he doesn’t touch your palm.
Repeat. Repeat this numerous times until your dog starts lifting his paw instead of sniffing or licking your palm when you extend your hand.
Command. Every time you place your hand palm up close to your dog, start saying the order “shake” or “give me your paw.”
Practice. Repeat this several times daily until your dog is familiar with both the command and the associated activity. Your dog should elevate his paw and place it in your hand every time you say “shake” or “give me your paw.” Make sure to thank him for a job well done each time.
