Dog’s About to Be Adopted, But She Refuses to Go Without ‘Her Puppy’

A Bond That Couldn’t Be Broken

At a local Humane Society shelter, two dogs found comfort in each other despite their vastly different pasts. Sully, a young puppy, had already been adopted once but was sadly returned. Lucy, an older stray, had spent much of her life without a family to call her own.

Though they arrived at the shelter separately, Lucy quickly became a mother figure to Sully, offering him love, guidance, and a sense of security. The two became inseparable, proving that sometimes, family isn’t about blood—it’s about love.

The Moment That Changed Everything

One day, Alaina Brinton walked into the shelter, searching for a furry companion to bring home. She had spotted Lucy’s picture in a newspaper and instantly felt a connection. Determined to adopt her, she made her way to the shelter, ready to welcome Lucy into her life.

But what she didn’t expect was to find Lucy deeply bonded with Sully. Shelter staff explained that Lucy had essentially adopted the little pup as her own, and they had grown inseparable during their time together.

Alaina knew she couldn’t bear to tear them apart. Instead of just taking Lucy home as she had originally planned, she spent some time with Sully. In no time, she fell in love with him too.

“I fell in love right away,” Alaina told The Dodo. “Besides, it was obvious Sully was looking to Lucy to show him what things were or weren’t okay, and I wouldn’t have had the heart to split them up.”

With that, she made a life-changing decision—she adopted them both.

A Perfect Transition Into Their Forever Home

Once Lucy and Sully arrived at their new home, it was clear that keeping them together was the best choice.

Both dogs had their own fears and anxieties, but having each other made the transition much easier. Whenever one seemed nervous or unsure, the other provided comfort and reassurance.

“The same way they feed off of each other’s excitement, they also fed off of each other’s growing comfort,” Alaina shared. “They settled in together, and figured out the new routine like a team. It was perfect, and I think it was a much easier transition for each of them because of the company of the other.”

As time passed, their bond only grew stronger.

Best Friends for Life

Years have gone by since that fateful adoption day, and Lucy and Sully are just as close as ever. They spend nearly every moment together, always looking out for one another.

“They’re buddies forever,” Alaina said. “Anytime they’re settling in together, Lucy will give Sully a couple of licks on his forehead, and he just looks like he’s so pleased.”

Despite their inseparability, their personalities are quite different. Sully is full of energy and excitement, while Lucy is more relaxed and composed. However, even when Sully runs off to explore, he never forgets to check on Lucy.

“Even when he’s roaming around the dog park, Sully will come back and check on Lucy every couple of minutes or so,” Alaina explained. “He says hi, walks with her for a bit, and then he’s off again. She doesn’t seem to mind.”

Their unbreakable bond is a beautiful reminder of the power of friendship and love. Sully and Lucy were meant to stay together, and thanks to Alaina’s kindness, they will never have to be apart.
