The Drever is a short-legged hound from Sweden that has been used for centuries to hunt foxes, deer, and other game. This breed is descended from the Westphalian Dachsbracke, a German scent hound that was imported to Sweden in 1910. The Drever is a robust and strong dog with a proud carriage, well-developed muscles, and an agile appearance. It has long ears and a long tail that can be either straight or slightly curved. In this article, we will discuss everything you need to know about the Drever including its history, temperament, health concerns, and more.

History

The Drever was developed in the early 1900s by Swedish hunters who wanted a small scent hound that could track down game animals such as foxes and deer. They crossed the Westphalian Dachsbracke with local Swedish dogs to create the Drever. The breed was officially recognized by the Swedish Kennel Club in 1945 and by the American Kennel Club in 2006.

Appearance

The Drever is a medium-sized dog with a long body and short legs. It has a muscular build with well-developed muscles and an agile appearance. Its coat can be either black or brown with white markings on its chest, feet, muzzle, and tail tip. The coat is short but thick enough to protect it from cold weather conditions. The ears are long and hang down close to its head while its tail can be either straight or slightly curved at the end.

Temperament

The Drever is an intelligent breed that loves being around people but can also be independent when needed. It is loyal to its family but wary of strangers so it needs proper socialization from an early age in order to become comfortable around new people and situations. This breed loves going on walks or hikes but should always be kept on leash due to its strong hunting instinct which may cause it to wander off after interesting scents or sounds it hears along the way.

Health Concerns

The Drever is generally healthy but like all breeds it can suffer from certain health issues such as hip dysplasia, eye problems, ear infections, skin allergies, epilepsy, bloat (gastric torsion), hypothyroidism, heart disease and more. Regular veterinary checkups are recommended in order to detect any potential health problems early on so they can be treated accordingly before they become serious issues for your pet’s health and wellbeing.

Care Requirements

The Drever does not require much grooming due to its short coat however regular brushing will help keep it looking clean and healthy while also removing any dirt or debris that may have gotten stuck in its fur during outdoor activities such as walking or playing outside in grassy areas etc.. This breed needs plenty of exercise so daily walks or hikes are recommended as well as plenty of playtime indoors if possible since this breed loves being active both mentally and physically!
