The Tornjak is a breed of livestock guardian dog native to Bosnia and Herzegovina and parts of Croatia. This large, strong breed has a well-proportioned, square-shaped body with a large, dark nose and dark eyes. It is known for its fierce loyalty and protective nature when it comes to guarding property and livestock.

The Tornjak is an ancient breed that has been around for over a millennium. It was originally bred as a herding and protection dog for livestock, but today it is also used as a family pet. The Tornjak is known for its steady disposition, friendly personality, courage, obedience, intelligence, dignity, and self-confidence.

When it comes to physical characteristics, the Tornjak has an average height between 22-26 inches (56-66 cm) and an average weight between 70-90 pounds (32-41 kg). Its coat can be either long or short in length with colors ranging from white to grayish brown or black. The coat should have some type of marking on the head or chest area.

In terms of temperament, the Tornjak is loyal and protective of its family members and property. It loves being around people but can be wary of strangers until it gets to know them better. This breed needs plenty of exercise in order to stay healthy both mentally and physically so regular walks are important for them. They also need plenty of mental stimulation in order to keep their minds active which can be done through activities such as agility training or playing fetch with them.

When it comes to health concerns, the Tornjak is generally considered a healthy breed but there are some conditions that they may be prone to such as hip dysplasia or elbow dysplasia which can cause lameness in the limbs due to joint malformation; eye problems such as progressive retinal atrophy which can lead to blindness; or skin allergies which can cause itching or hair loss. Regular vet checkups are important in order to catch any potential issues early on before they become more serious health problems down the line.

Overall, the Tornjak is an intelligent and fiercely loyal breed that makes an excellent guard dog for both people and property alike. They need plenty of exercise in order to stay healthy both mentally and physically so regular walks are important for them as well as mental stimulation through activities such as agility training or playing fetch with them. With proper care this breed will make an excellent companion for many years!
