The Spanish Water Dog is an incredibly versatile breed of dog that has been used for centuries as a herding, hunting, and guard dog. This breed is known for its curly coat and strong muscular body, making them perfect for outdoor activities. They are also highly intelligent and loyal to their families, making them great companions.

The Spanish Water Dog originated in the Iberian Peninsula in Europe where they were used as a general purpose sheepdog and guard. They have also traditionally been used as a gundog or retriever of wildfowl. The Spanish Water Dog is a medium-sized breed standing 15-20 inches at the shoulder and weighing between 30-45 pounds when fully grown. They have a low-shedding coat that can be either clipped short or left to form cords when long.

The Spanish Water Dog is an active breed that needs plenty of exercise and mental stimulation to stay healthy and happy. They are best suited to active homes with lots of outdoor space where they can run around and play. These dogs do well with children but should always be supervised due to their herding instincts which may cause them to nip at heels or bark excessively if not properly trained.

When it comes to training, the Spanish Water Dog is highly intelligent and eager to please so they respond well to positive reinforcement techniques such as treats, praise, and rewards for good behavior. It’s important to start training early on in order to establish good habits from the beginning. Socialization is also very important for this breed as it helps them become more comfortable around other people and animals.

Overall, the Spanish Water Dog is an intelligent, loyal, and energetic breed that makes a great companion for active families who have plenty of time to devote to their pet’s care and training needs. With proper care and attention, these dogs can live up to 12 years or more!
