The Yorkshire Terrier, also known as the “Yorkie”, is a small and energetic breed that has become one of the most popular toy dogs in the world. Despite their small size, they have big personalities and are known for their affectionate and playful nature. But what is the history of this beloved breed and how did it become such a popular companion animal?

The Yorkshire Terrier was originally bred in the 19th century in Yorkshire, England, as a working dog used to catch rats and other small rodents in clothing mills and mines. They were also used as hunting dogs, but their small size made them ideal lapdogs for the wealthy. The breed was eventually recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1885, and it quickly gained popularity as a companion animal.

The Yorkie’s popularity only continued to grow in the 20th century, and today it is one of the most recognized breeds in the world. With its silky coat, big personality, and affectionate nature, it is easy to see why the Yorkie has captured the hearts of so many people.
