The Briard, also known as the Berger de Brie, is an ancient French herding dog that has been around since the 8th century. They were originally bred for guarding and herding sheep and other livestock, but have since become a popular companion dog. The breed gained new responsibilities during times of war, when it helped to transport supplies and messages between soldiers.

Briards are large dogs with a strong build and thick coat. They are loyal, intelligent, and devoted to their owners. They make excellent guard dogs due to their protective nature and alertness. Briards are also known for their strong sense of smell which makes them great at tracking and search-and-rescue operations.

Briards have a long history with humans, dating back to the 14th century when they were depicted in popular culture. Thomas Jefferson was particularly fond of the breed; he owned two Briards named Bergère and Tète who accompanied him on his journey from France in 1789.

Briards require plenty of exercise and mental stimulation in order to stay healthy and happy. They need daily walks or runs as well as activities such as agility or obedience training to keep them engaged. It is important for owners to be consistent with training so that their Briard can learn how to behave properly in various situations.

Briards are generally good with children but should be supervised when interacting with smaller kids due to their size and strength. They can get along well with other pets if they are socialized early on, but may try to herd them if not properly trained.

Overall, the Briard is an ancient breed that has been around for centuries and continues to be a beloved companion today. With proper care, training, exercise, and love they can make wonderful family members for many years to come!
