Digging is an instinctive behavior in dogs that can be both frustrating and dangerous if it’s done in areas that they shouldn’t. Here are some tips on how to handle unauthorized digging:

  • Identify the cause of the digging – Before you can find a solution, it’s important to first identify why your pup is choosing to dig where they shouldn’t. Possible motivations include boredom, playfulness, curiosity or even a lack of exercise!
  • Invest in toys and tools – Provide your pup with plenty of stimulating activities such as puzzle toys, chew toys and interactive games. You could also try getting them a sandbox or digging pit so that they have somewhere safe to do their thing!
  • Establish a “no-dig zone” – If there are particular places where you don’t want your pup to dig (such as flower beds or decking) then make sure to keep this area off limits. Regularly inspect these zones for any signs of recent digging activity.
  • Supervise outdoor play sessions – Make sure you are present when your pup goes outside so that you can intervene if necessary (e.g redirecting them back onto their toys). Take a few minutes each day to practice basic commands such as ‘leave it’ which could come in handy when dealing with unauthorised digging episodes!
  • Use deterrents – If all else fails then you might want to consider using deterrents such as fencing off areas which they shouldn’t enter or laying down chicken wire if burrowing is the problem. You could also try scolding them with a stern ‘No!’ whenever you catch them digging up something that isn’t meant for them but make sure not to overuse this approach because too much punishment can have adverse effects on your relationship!
