Biting might be a natural behavior for puppies, but it’s not one that you want your pup to continue exhibiting as they get older. Fortunately, there are several steps that you can take to curb your puppy’s biting and help them learn acceptable behaviors.

Redirect Your Puppy’s Attention

The first step in stopping your puppy from biting is redirecting their attention elsewhere. Whenever they start to bite or chew on something, offer them an appropriate toy instead. This will teach them that biting is not allowed and give them an alternative activity to focus on.

Discourage Teething

Puppies like to explore the world with their mouths, so it’s important that you discourage teething whenever possible. If your pup starts gnawing on furniture or other objects in the home, redirect their attention away from the item and give them a toy or treat instead. Doing this consistently will help them understand what behaviors are appropriate and which are not.

Use Positive Reinforcement

Positive reinforcement is key when it comes to training your pup not to bite. Every time your pup exhibits appropriate behavior – such as sitting quietly rather than jumping up and biting – make sure you reward them with words of encouragement and treats so that they know what behavior you expect from them.

Don’t Play Tug-of-War With Your Pup

Playing tug-of-war might seem like a fun game, but it can actually encourage bad habits such as nipping and biting in puppies. Teaching your pup how to play appropriately is essential if you want them to grow into an obedient dog who knows how to be gentle around people and other animals.

By following these steps, you should have no problem teaching your puppy how to stop biting in no time! Just remember: patience is key! Good luck!
