In Palenque, Mexico, a tiny tent with a Nativity scene was set up in the town’s main square with the usual assortment of holiday figurines posed in tranquil silence, when a stray dog decided to join.
This wasn’t just a moment to snuggle in the hay during an unusually chilly season in the region. As local journalist Eric Guzman soon discovered. The dog had given birth!
“I was awestruck and joyful, seeing that she had her puppies in a safe place where they won’t get wet. It’s been cold lately in Palenque, but it’s usually hot throughout the year.”
Guzman spread the word about the real life miracle birth and locals brought food and drink for the mama and her little ones. Aside from allusions to holiness, animal advocates from Dejando Huellitas S.O.S. Palenque have stepped in to find families to care for them permanently.
Guzman thinks the birth will leave a lasting legacy.“Hopefully, we as citizens will become more aware when it comes to dogs, to adopt strays [rather than buy dogs],” Guzmán said. “We should love them, no matter where they come from.”
