The Norwegian Lundehund is a small dog breed of the Spitz type that originates from Norway. It’s name, Lundehund, is derived from the Norwegian word for puffin, a bird also known as a sea parrot. This breed was specifically created to hunt puffins on Norway’s rocky island of Vaeroy.

This unique breed has several features that make it well-suited for its job. For starters, it has six toes on each foot – all of them double- or triple-jointed – and an amazing range of motion. Its short but dense double coat is slightly thicker around the neck and shoulders to protect it from cold water and sharp rocks. It also has ears that can be closed tightly against the head to keep out dirt and water while hunting in caves and tunnels.

The Norwegian Lundehund is an intelligent, alert, and loyal companion who loves being part of the family. They are active dogs who need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy. While they may not be suited for hunting puffins anymore, they make great companions for active families looking for an unusual pet!
