Even though the babies were not her own, Ginger adores being a mother.
When Ginger encountered several little foster kittens needing a mother after all of her puppies had been adopted and placed with loving households, she recognized her mothering abilities might still be convenient.
Since 2018, Susan Hicks, who saved Ginger a little over four years ago, has been fostering litters of kittens. Ginger gets so excited whenever new kittens arrive at the house that she starts exploring their box. The kittens enjoy playing with and jumping on Ginger; occasionally, they even try to nurse from her.
These kittens are weak and vulnerable when they first arrive at Hicks’ house. They are little, frail, and still learning how to live in the world. To satisfy their need for comfort, Ginger is there.

It is customary for foster parents to give kittens a large cuddly animal to comfort them when they are in their care. Hicks, though, has never required a stuffed animal because of Ginger.
“Ginger is like a living, breathing, snoring body pillow for these kittens,” Hicks said.
The kittens’ early comfort level with dogs as Ginger’s socialization efforts is another benefit, which is great news for prospective adopters who already have a dog at home.
“People will reach out to me saying, ‘I want one of your kittens because I know that they’re good with dogs,” Hicks reported.
Hicks can tell Ginger is upset when the kittens eventually grow up and have to depart. But Ginger is aware that every time she sees kittens leave, another group of kittens is just around the corner and will be even more in need of her care and comfort.
