Just a year old, Rufo — a Pitbull mix — was dropped off at a shelter in Yonkers, New York. He was so cute and sweet, that volunteers anticipated he’d be adopted quickly. But, days turned into months; months into years. Rufo was locked in a cage most of the day, except for the hour when a worker named Danny taught him to play “fetch” with a ball in the yard.
We’ll call it ‘the seven-year itch,’ the shelter workers, having watched this poor dog grow into his middle age in a cage, were determined to find him a home. Their relentless outreach brought in a woman from Boston who, through her network, found Rufo his ideal owner: a man whose senior dog had died. He now had time off from work to care for a new best friend.
