The Shar-Pei is an ancient and unique breed of dog that has been around for centuries. This breed is known for its wrinkled skin, blue-black tongues, and loyal nature. It is believed to have originated in China during the Han Dynasty and was used as a guard dog by peasants. The Shar-Pei was driven to the brink of extinction in the 20th century due to overbreeding and lack of interest, but has since made a comeback thanks to dedicated fanciers who worked hard to save it.

The Shar-Pei is classified as a short-nosed or brachycephalic breed, similar to the Bulldog, Boxer, and Pug. They are medium-sized dogs with a square profile and broad flat head. Their muzzle is wide, padded, and full with deep wrinkles on their forehead. The coat can be either rough or smooth in texture and comes in various colors such as black, fawn, cream, red fawn, sable, sand, chocolate or blue.

The Shar-Pei is known for being loyal and devoted to its family members but can be standoffish with strangers which makes them great guard dogs. They are intelligent dogs that require consistent training from an early age so they learn how to behave properly around people and other animals. They need plenty of exercise every day but should not be overexerted due to their short noses which make them highly sensitive to heat.

This fascinating breed may require more grooming than other breeds due to its wrinkled skin which can easily become irritated if not cared for properly. Regular brushing will help keep their coat healthy while removing any dirt or debris that may get stuck in the wrinkles. Additionally they should have their nails trimmed regularly as well as their ears cleaned out weekly with a damp cloth or cotton ball dipped in warm water mixed with a mild ear cleaner solution.

The Shar-Pei is generally healthy but can suffer from certain hereditary conditions such as hip dysplasia or entropion (inward rolling of eyelids). It’s important that potential owners research these conditions before getting a Shar Pei puppy so they know what health issues may arise down the line and how best to care for them if needed.

Overall the Shar-Pei is an ancient yet unique breed like no other that requires patience and dedication from its owners but will reward them with loyalty and devotion beyond compare when given proper care and attention!
