The Canaan Dog is an ancient breed of pariah dog that has been living in the Middle East for thousands of years. It is the national dog of Israel and is one of the oldest breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC). The Canaan Dog is a quick, medium-sized pasture dog that is docile with family and aloof with strangers. They are highly intelligent and easily trainable, making them a great fit for active families.

Appearance

The Canaan Dog has a short coat that comes in a variety of colors including black, white, red, tan, gray, and brown. They have square builds with upright ears and bushy tails. They typically weigh between 40-50 pounds and stand 18-24 inches tall at the shoulder.

Temperament

Canaan Dogs are loyal and loving with their families but can be aloof with strangers. They are highly intelligent and easily trainable which makes them great family pets. They need plenty of exercise to stay healthy both physically and mentally so they make great companions for active families.

Health

Canaan Dogs are generally healthy dogs but like all breeds they can be prone to certain health issues such as hip dysplasia, eye problems, epilepsy, skin allergies, and autoimmune diseases. Regular vet checkups are important to ensure your dog stays healthy throughout its life.

Care

Canaan Dogs require regular brushing to keep their coats looking their best. They also need plenty of exercise to stay healthy both physically and mentally so daily walks or playtime in a fenced yard are recommended. Grooming should include regular nail trims as well as ear cleaning to prevent infection or irritation from buildup of wax or debris in the ears.

History

The Canaan Dog was originally bred by Dr Rudolphina Menzel in Israel during the 1930s from local Pariah Dogs she captured from around her kibbutz on Mount Carmel near Haifa Bay in northern Israel. She developed this breed into what we know today as the Canaan Dog which proved to be highly intelligent and easily trainable making it popular among farmers who used them as herders or guard dogs for their flocks or homes respectively. Today they are still used as working dogs in some parts of Israel but more commonly they make wonderful family pets due to their intelligence and loyalty towards their owners.

Conclusion

The Canaan Dog is an ancient breed that has been living in the Middle East for thousands of years making it one of the oldest breeds recognized by the AKC today. It is a loyal companion that loves its family but can be aloof with strangers making it an ideal fit for active families who want an intelligent pet that needs plenty of exercise to stay healthy both physically and mentally. With proper care these dogs can live long happy lives filled with love!
