The Clumber Spaniel is a large breed of dog that originated in England. It is believed that the breed was actually developed in France, however. Clumbers are powerful bird dogs with heavy bones, built long and low, and have a massive head. They stand 17 to 20 inches tall and can weigh between 55-85 pounds.

Clumber Spaniels were originally bred to help hunters find and retrieve game birds. Today, there is an effort to re-establish the breed as a companion animal. They are loving and sweet at home, but still retain their hunting instincts when outdoors.

Appearance

Clumber Spaniels have a unique look that sets them apart from other breeds. They have a broad head with a short muzzle, small ears that hang close to the head, and dark brown eyes that are set wide apart. Their coat is thick and white with lemon or orange markings on the face, chest, legs, feet, and tail tip. The coat should be brushed regularly to keep it looking its best.

Temperament

Clumber Spaniels are known for being gentle and affectionate companions who love spending time with their families. They get along well with children of all ages and make great playmates for them. Clumbers can also be quite independent at times but they do need regular exercise to stay healthy both mentally and physically.

They are intelligent dogs who can learn quickly if given consistent training from an early age. It’s important to note that these dogs may not always respond well to harsh training methods as they tend to shut down when faced with too much pressure or stress. Positive reinforcement techniques such as clicker training work best for this breed as they reward good behavior rather than punishing bad behavior.

Health Concerns

Like all breeds of dog, Clumbers can suffer from certain health conditions which include hip dysplasia, eye problems such as cataracts or glaucoma, ear infections due to their floppy ears trapping moisture inside them, skin allergies due to their thick coats trapping allergens against their skin, bloat (gastric torsion), epilepsy or seizures due to abnormal electrical activity in the brain, luxating patellas (dislocated knee caps), hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid gland) or heart disease such as mitral valve disease or patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). Regular veterinary checkups will help ensure your dog stays healthy throughout his life span which is usually between 10-12 years old for this breed of dog.

Exercise Needs

Clumber Spaniels need plenty of exercise every day in order for them to stay fit both physically and mentally healthy. These dogs love going on long walks or hikes with their owners where they can explore new sights and smells while getting some much needed physical activity at the same time! Playing fetch in the yard or taking part in agility classes are also great ways for your pup to stay active while having fun!

Grooming Requirements

Due to their thick double coats made up of both an undercoat which helps insulate them against cold temperatures as well as an outer coat which helps protect them from wet weather conditions; Clumbers require regular grooming sessions throughout the year in order for them to stay looking their best! Brushing should be done at least once per week using either a slicker brush or pin brush depending on your pup’s coat type; bathing should only be done when necessary using a mild shampoo designed specifically for dogs; trimming nails should be done every two weeks; checking ears weekly for signs of infection; brushing teeth daily using toothpaste designed specifically for pets; checking eyes regularly for any signs of irritation; trimming fur around eyes if needed; checking pads on feet regularly for any signs of injury or infection; clipping fur around feet if needed; checking anal glands monthly if needed; providing plenty of chew toys so your pup doesn’t chew on furniture instead!

Final Thoughts

The Clumber Spaniel is a loving and sweet breed who loves spending time with his family members! He needs plenty of exercise each day in order for him to stay fit both physically and mentally healthy while regular grooming sessions will help keep his coat looking its best throughout the year! If you’re looking for an affectionate companion who loves being outdoors then this could be the perfect breed for you!
