Chinese Crested dogs are one of the most unique and recognizable dog breeds in the world. With their hairless bodies, powder-puff tails, and delicate features, they have often been considered a “toy” breed, loved for their affectionate and lively personalities. But where did these quirky little dogs come from? In this article, we’ll explore the history of Chinese Crested dogs, from their earliest origins to their popularity in modern times.

Origins of the Chinese Crested

Despite the name, Chinese Crested dogs are not native to China. They are believed to have originated in Africa and were likely brought to China by traders and sailors in the 15th century. From there, they were bred and refined to create the unique breed we know today.

There are two distinct varieties of Chinese Crested: the Hairless and the Powderpuff. The Hairless variety is the most well-known, with a hairless body and tufts of fur on the head, feet, and tail. The Powderpuff variety, on the other hand, has a full coat of soft, fluffy hair all over its body. Both varieties can be born in the same litter, and are recognized as separate but equal breeds by most kennel clubs.

Throughout their history, Chinese Crested dogs have been used for a variety of purposes. In ancient times, they were kept as lapdogs and companions for the wealthy and noble. They were also believed to have healing powers and were often used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat ailments and ward off evil spirits.

The Chinese Crested in Europe and America

Despite their long history in China, it wasn’t until the late 1800s that Chinese Crested dogs began to gain popularity in Europe and America. They were first imported to the United States in the early 1900s, where they quickly became popular with the elite and fashionable set.

One of the most famous Chinese Crested dogs of the early 20th century was Gypsy Lee, who won the title of Best of Breed at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in 1939. Gypsy Lee was owned by Ida Garrett, a prominent breeder, and judge of Chinese Crested dogs, and helped to establish the breed in the United States.

During World War II, Chinese Crested dogs were nearly wiped out in Europe due to food shortages and bombing raids. However, a handful of dedicated breeders managed to save the breed, and it began to gain popularity again in the post-war years.

Today, Chinese Crested dogs are still popular with dog lovers around the world. They are often kept as companion animals and are known for their lively, affectionate personalities. They are also popular in the world of dog shows, where their unique appearance and quirky personalities make them stand out from the crowd.

The history of Chinese Crested dogs is a fascinating one, spanning centuries and continents. From their origins in Africa to their popularity in modern times, these quirky little dogs have captured the hearts of people around the world. Whether you’re a fan of the Hairless or the Powderpuff variety, there’s no denying the charm and charisma of the Chinese Crested.
