The Irish Water Spaniel is a breed of dog that is instantly recognizable by its crisply curled coat and tapering ‘rat tail. It is the tallest of the spaniels recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC). This ruggedly built hunting dog has webbed feet and a two-layered, water-repellent coat, making it perfectly suited to retrieve in water.

The Irish Water Spaniel is an intelligent, playful, and eager-to-please breed. It loves to swim and can be quite vocal when necessary to warn its family. Its body is of medium length with a deep chest and strong legs for agility. The head is round with a flat skull, long ears that hang close to the face, and dark eyes that are full of expression. The coat is liver colored with tight curls on the back, sides, neck, chest and belly while the face has short curls or waves.

This breed has been around since at least 1884 when it was first recognized by AKC but its exact origin remains unknown. Some believe it may have descended from ancient Asian breeds while others think it could be related to other European spaniels such as the English Springer Spaniel or even the Poodle. Whatever its origin may be, this breed has been used for centuries as a hunting companion in Ireland due to its ability to work in wet conditions.

The Irish Water Spaniel makes an excellent companion for active families who enjoy outdoor activities such as swimming or hiking. This breed needs plenty of exercise and mental stimulation so they do best with owners who can provide them with plenty of physical activity as well as mental challenges such as obedience training or agility courses. They are generally good natured dogs but can become territorial if not properly socialized from an early age so it’s important to introduce them to new people and animals gradually over time.

Overall, the Irish Water Spaniel is a loyal companion that loves spending time with their family members both indoors and out! With proper care and attention they make wonderful pets for those looking for an active canine companion who will remain devoted throughout their lifetime.
