When it comes to Dutch dog breeds, most people are familiar with the likes of the Dutch Shepherd or the Dutch Barge Dog. But there’s one breed that’s often overlooked, despite its long and storied history in the Netherlands: the Nederlandse Kooikerhondje.

Also known as the Dutch Decoy Dog, the Kooikerhondje has been around for centuries, with written records of the breed dating back to the 16th century. Originally bred to assist in the hunting of waterfowl, Kooikerhondjes were trained to lure ducks and other birds into cages called “koois” using their charming and friendly personalities.

Today, the Kooikerhondje is still used as a hunting dog in some parts of Europe, but it’s also a beloved companion dog for families all over the world. With their small size (they typically weigh between 20-25 pounds) and affectionate nature, Kooikerhondjes are perfect for people who want a dog that’s both energetic and easy to handle.

One of the most distinctive features of the Kooikerhondje is its coat, which is made up of a combination of long, feathered fur and shorter, denser fur. The fur is usually red and white, and the breed is known for its striking markings, including a “blaze” of white fur on the face and a ring of darker fur around the eyes.

If you’re thinking about adding a Kooikerhondje to your family, there are a few things to keep in mind. First and foremost, these dogs are highly intelligent and require plenty of mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy. They also need regular exercise, so if you’re not an active person, this might not be the breed for you.

That being said, if you’re looking for a friendly, affectionate, and highly trainable dog that’s steeped in history and heritage, the Nederlandse Kooikerhondje might just be the perfect pet for you. So why not take a closer look at this hidden gem of Dutch dog breeds?
