The Pekingese is a small but mighty breed with a rich history that dates back over a thousand years. Originally bred as palace dogs in ancient China, the Pekingese were highly prized for their companionship and bravery. These dogs were so valued that they were kept in the imperial palace and were only given as gifts to royalty or high-ranking officials.

The name “Pekingese” comes from the city of Peking (modern-day Beijing) where the breed was first developed. It’s believed that the Pekingese was created by crossing the Lhasa Apso with other small breeds, such as the Shih Tzu, to produce a dog that was both small and courageous.

The Pekingese played an important role in Chinese culture and were believed to have spiritual significance. They were often depicted in paintings and sculptures and were considered good luck charms. The breed was also used as guard dogs, as they were fearless and would bark at intruders to warn their owners.

In 1860, the Pekingese was introduced to the Western world when British soldiers captured several of the dogs during the Second Opium War. The breed quickly became popular in Europe and the United States, and the Pekingese Club of America was established in 1909.

Today, the Pekingese remains a popular breed due to its affectionate and friendly nature. These dogs are great companions and make great family pets for those who are willing to put in the time and effort to care for their long, luxurious coats. With proper care, the Pekingese can live for over 15 years and will be a loyal and affectionate companion for many years to come.
