The Spanish Water Dog is a loyal and versatile companion that has been around for centuries. This medium-sized breed is known for its low-shedding, wooly curls and strong herding, hunting, and guardian instincts. The Spanish Water Dog is an intelligent and well-balanced dog that loves to work and needs lots of playtime and exercise.

Originally from the Iberian Peninsula in Europe, the Spanish Water Dog was used as a general purpose sheepdog and guard. It was also used as a gundog to retrieve waterfowls. Today, this breed is still used as a herder but it’s also becoming increasingly popular as a family pet due to its intelligence, loyalty, and versatility.

The Spanish Water Dog stands between 15–20 inches at the shoulder and weighs between 30–50 pounds when fully grown. Its coat can be either curly or wavy in texture with colors ranging from black to brown to white or combinations of these colors. The coat requires regular grooming in order to keep it healthy and free of mats or tangles.

This breed is known for being incredibly smart which makes them easy to train but they can also be independent thinkers so consistency is key when training them. They are very eager to please their owners so positive reinforcement works best when teaching them new commands or tricks. They need plenty of mental stimulation in order to stay happy and healthy so activities such as agility courses or puzzles are great ways to keep them engaged.

The Spanish Water Dog loves spending time with its family and will bond closely with its owners if given enough attention. They are very loyal companions who will protect their family if needed but they are not aggressive by nature so proper socialization is important from an early age in order to prevent any potential issues down the road.

Overall, the Spanish Water Dog is an excellent choice for those looking for an intelligent, loyal, and versatile companion who loves spending time with their family members both indoors and outdoors. With proper training, socialization, love, attention, exercise, mental stimulation, and regular grooming this breed can make an excellent addition to any home!
