The Tornjak is a large livestock guardian dog native to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. The name comes from the local word for a sheep pen, “tor”. This breed is known for its steady disposition, friendly nature, courage, obedience, intelligence, and dignity.

The Tornjak is used for herding and protection of livestock. It has a stable temperament and is friendly, calm, courageous, obedient, and full of self-confidence. Its square body outline gives it an impressive presence that helps it ward off predators. Its thick double coat protects it from the elements in its mountainous homeland.

This breed has an average lifespan of 12-14 years. They can be prone to health issues if they are fed too much protein which can affect their coat. Regular exercise is important for this breed as they have high energy levels that need to be channeled in a positive way.

Training should start early with the Tornjak as they are intelligent dogs that learn quickly but may become stubborn if not given consistent guidance. Socialization should also begin early so that the dog learns how to interact with other animals and people in a positive manner.

Overall the Tornjak is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a loyal companion who will protect their family and property with dedication and courage. With proper training and care this breed can make an excellent addition to any home!
