The German Spitz is an ancient breed of dog that has been around for centuries. It is a small to medium-sized, fluffy companion breed that hails from Germany and comes in five distinct varieties based on size. The German Spitz is always attentive, lively, and exceptionally devoted to its owner. This breed is very teachable and easy to train, making it a great pet for families or individuals who are looking for an intelligent and loyal companion.

However, like all breeds of dogs, the German Spitz has certain health needs that must be taken into consideration when deciding if this breed is right for you. In this article we will discuss the health needs of the German Spitz so that you can make an informed decision about whether or not this breed is right for you.

Diet

The German Spitz should be fed a high-quality diet that consists of lean proteins such as chicken, fish, turkey, and eggs; complex carbohydrates such as brown rice and oats; and healthy fats such as olive oil and flaxseed oil. It’s important to feed your dog food specifically formulated for their age group (puppy, adult, senior) as well as their activity level (active or sedentary). You should also avoid feeding your dog table scraps as they may contain unhealthy ingredients or cause digestive issues.

Exercise

The German Spitz requires regular exercise in order to stay healthy and fit. This breed loves going on long walks or hikes but can also benefit from playing fetch in the backyard or going swimming with its owner. It’s important to ensure your dog gets enough exercise each day in order to maintain its physical health as well as mental stimulation which helps prevent boredom-related behaviors such as chewing furniture or barking excessively.

Grooming

The German Spitz has a thick double coat which requires regular brushing in order to keep it free of tangles and mats. This breed sheds seasonally so it’s important to brush them regularly during these times in order to remove any excess fur from their coat before it ends up all over your home! Additionally, you should trim their nails every few weeks in order to keep them at a manageable length and check their ears weekly for signs of infection such as redness or discharge.

Health Issues

Like all breeds of dogs, the German Spitz can be prone to certain health issues including hip dysplasia, eye problems such as cataracts or glaucoma, allergies, patellar luxation (kneecap dislocation), thyroid problems, heart disease, epilepsy and skin conditions such as mange or hot spots. It’s important to take your dog for regular checkups with your veterinarian in order to catch any potential health issues early on before they become more serious problems down the line. Additionally, you should ensure that your dog receives all necessary vaccinations according to its age group in order to protect it from infectious diseases.
