There are many crazy and bizarre sporting events out there. There are relatively few restrictions on what individuals will compete in, from the bizarre events Red Bull frequently hosts to the various local competitions like the skijoring competition in Steamboat Springs. In several international sports, such as horse racing and dog shows, animals also frequently make an appearance. But what about dog surfing?

I occasionally come across news articles about dogs who are learning to surf. Every few years, one will emerge and shock the world. But did you know that there are actually a number of dog surfing competitions? The 2022 World Dog Surfing Championships were held in Pacifica, California, on August 6, and it looked great.
There are lots of video online, particularly on the World Dog Surfing Instagram page, but there aren’t any complete replays of the tournament for me to watch and break down for you.

If I had to choose a favorite, I would probably choose Derby California, the dog with the blue mohawk. He possesses both the style and the aptitude. That’s not to minimize the other canines participating in this competition. They all deserve all the affection and treats in the world because they are such excellent boys and girls.
